Grapefruit (Mayo Clinic) Diet
If you’ve been traveling around the diet circuit very long you’ve probably come across the famous (or infamous!) “Mayo Clinic” diet that has nothing to do with the real Mayo Clinic. It is a popular very low calorie fad diet. Does it work? It never did work for me. I did lose weight but I quickly put it back on when I started eating regular food. I’ve posted the diet here for your own review. I don’t recommend it, however.
Why is it called the Mayo Clinic Diet? This is from their website: “Each year, Mayo Clinic is deluged with inquiries about the so-called Mayo Clinic Diet, versions of which have popped up across the country and around the world for decades. The only problem — none of these diets is associated with or has been endorsed by Mayo Clinic.
No one knows the origin of the diet myth, but Mayo dietitians say it’s been around since the 1940s. Over the years, the supposed Mayo Clinic Diet has taken many forms; some push grapefruit, some eggs, some meat. But all share common characteristics: They are “one-size-fits-all” diets which limit the variety of foods and promise dramatic weight loss. These are sure signs of a hoax.”
The Mayo Clinic does have a diet plan as outlined in their book, Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight for Every Body – A lifestyle approach to permanent weight loss.
Diet Plan
BREAKFAST:
1/2 grapefruit or 8 oz. unsweetened juice.(39 calories)
2 Eggs any style (158 calories)
2 Slices of bacon (284 calories)
Black coffee or tea, no sugar (0 calories)
LUNCH:
1/2 grapefruit or 8 oz. unsweetened juice.(39 calories)
Salad and or raw veggies (any dressing, not low fat or fat free) (150 calories)
Meat (Cooked any way calories) (298 calories)
DINNER:
1/2 grapefruit or 8 oz. unsweetened juice.(39 calories)
Meat (cooked any way calories) (200 calories)
Vegetables (any green or red, may be cooked in butter or Seasoning or a salad as above) (150 calories)
Black coffee or tea, no sugar (0 calories)
BEDTIME:
(optional) 8 oz. Tomato juice or skim milk (41 calories)
TOTAL CALORIES: 1398
