Butterflies are an enigma to most of us. They appear for a short time and then, they are gone. Oh, sure we know all about caterpillars and how they transform into the beautiful flying insect, but there’s a lot more to learn about butterflies beyond the basics. For example, do you know the monarch butterfly consumes milkweed? So, if you want to attract this royal winged species to your garden you’ll have to allow the weed many gardeners spend a fortune to eradicate. Other species may not be attracted to the milkweed at all because butterflies from different parts of the world like certain plants and become accustomed to them. If you want to attract a certain species to your garden you will need to learn what that species prefers.

The hobby of butterfly watching oftentimes leads to collecting butterflies. This does not have to be expensive. You can invest as much or as little as you choose as your interest grows. If you decide to collect butterflies there is a humane way of doing so. Butterflies have a short lifespan; simply find those that have already perished and use them in your collection. By creating a collection without torturing the insects you will feel good about what you are doing. Sure, it may take a little longer to do this, but your reward of knowing you did not intentionally harm the beautiful winged insects will be worth the extra effort.

If you want to display your butterfly collection to help someone else appreciate the butterfly watching hobby, you should invest in a display case of some sort that will keep curious hands away from your precious insects. It’s very easy to harm a butterfly’s structure because of their frail construction. A case with a glass door will allow easy viewing and keep hands and dust from contaminating your collection.

You can make your hobby more interesting by traveling to different areas that allow butterfly watching.
