Salt Water Flush - Not a New Thing

I was taking a look at my site’s stats and noticed that several people came to AppleCity.com searching for information about the popular “salt water flush”.  Of course, that doesn’t surprise me. People come to AppleCity searching for all kinds of information and that’s okay — I try to provide the info that you are looking for (within reason!). But, what does surprise me is that someone typed in the phrase “new salt water flush cleanse”. New? Well, no. That particular “detox method” has been around for as long (and longer) than I can remember.

In fact, my grandmother used a salt water flush but she didn’t call it that. It was simply Epson Salts to the rescue. I seriously doubt she knew anything about sea salt (the recommended salt of the currently popular salt water flush). My grandmother’s recipe was simple: Just mix 2 tablespoons of Epsom salt in a quart of warm water and drink it first thing in the morning (usually instead of eating breakfast). Voila! a bowel movement is always forthcoming (aka “flush”).

It’s really no secret as to how it works: The Epsom salt causes the water to go through the GI tract instead of the urinary tract, washing out blockages in the colon. My grandmother always made a horrible face when she downed the mixture but she was religious about the cure (err … flush). I haven’t tried it — that face turned me off forever.

These days you are advised to mix sea salt and lemon or lime juice in a quart of warm water and do the same thing. It’s called the “salt water flush” and is said to be a powerful detox method. Hmmmm …. my grandmother found it to be powerful laxative. Detox? The word was never in her vocabulary.

Time marches on and nothing really changes. We just invent new words to describe the old ways. If you are looking for a recipe for the salt water flush it’s really simple: 2 teaspoons sea salt, the juice of 1 lemon or lime and a quart of warm water. Mix it thoroughly until salt is dissolved. Drink it all (the whole quart) on an empty stomach (first thing in the morning is best) and stay close to the bathroom.
